Driving instructor training since 1996
Am I eligible to train to become a driving instructor?
The qualifying process to become a Driving Instructor is controlled by DSA (Driving Standards Agency). DSA is a government agency working within the Department of Transport (DoT). Based in Nottingham the DSA conducts practical driving tests for all categories of vehicles and, through sub-contractors, conducts the theory tests associated with each category of vehicle. The DSA also controls the Register of Approved Driving Instructors (Car) and conducts the tests associated with being entered onto the register; hence the official title DSA ADI (car) for Driving Instructors.
The rules and regulations pertaining to the qualification process, especially those concerning the trainee licence scheme are given in a relatively short format below. Even so, they make heavy reading so if you decide to train then make sure that you keep in close contact with me through every step of the way so that slip ups are avoided.
The basic requirements for driving instructor training are:
- Are at least 21 years old (you may be eligible as early as 20 years old)
- Have held a full UK or UK Acceptable Driving Licence for at least 3.5 years
- Can read a number plate at a distance of 27.5m (90ft)
- Pass an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance check
